Treasurer’s Report:

The financial statement for 1995 was presented by Betsy Miller.

Old Business:

  1. FFA Scholarship (not 4H) An equine proficiency award in the amount of $ 400 was approved by the membership.Jim Schwissow will investigate the selection process.
  2. Further discussion centered on a Brian Oetjen Scholarship. An annual donation of $ 350 was discussed to assist a student at UW – Madison entering their final year.  This could be an equine proficiency award selected by the equine faculty.  Another choice would be as a source of funds to defray costs of an equine externship experience (payable after successful completion of externship). Brian’s wife, Kathryn, reminded me of his support of organized veterinary medicine and suggested defraying some of the expenses incurred by a student attending our annual state meeting or the annual AAEP meeting.  Comments or suggestions? Please contact Bill Lindsay at 608-835-8696.
  3. Horse Shows. No one has yet contacted myself or Barb Svang re participating in horse show duties.  Consider contributing one day and help us maintain our organization’s financial health and the quality of speakers we attract to our meetings.  The remains at $ 250/10 hr day. $25/hr overtime with the DVM charging for professional services and medications. The WEPA receives $ 50 of this.  The DVM gets paid only after collecting from show management.
  4. EIA. There were 80 confirmed positives in 1994 and 20 in 1995.Current rules call for testing each calendar year.  Several members expressed concern that horses are passing through sales barns without Coggins tests.  Bob Magnus will request increased vigilance from the state veterinarian.
  5. Midwest Horse Fair. This year the fair was help April 19, 20 & 21 of 1996.  The WEPA assisted in two ways: by providing “emergency care” at the fair and by staffing a booth. Thanks to Travis Henry for a job well done! The membership approved the creation of an updated WEPA brochure only listing those members whose dues are current.

New Business:

Look for announcements of our fall meeting.  It will be on a Saturday and will most likely include a wet lab.  We hope to announce this meeting in the Ill, IA and MN newsletters.

Continuing Education:

Dr Asbury presented an excellent update of equine reproduction topics.

Thank you:

Thanks to Rob Newlin and Rhome Morieux for their support of this meeting!

Passing:

We mourn the death of Dr Brian Oetjen on February 29, 1996.

Respectfully submitted,

Bill Lindsay
